"While on the boardwalk at South Padre Island, Ron Clark ran into a friend who was at the festival going on in Harlingen. He told Ron about the “Bird of the Trip”, an Amazon Kingfisher, only the 2nd ABA record, that was found earlier in the day. While too late to go that evening, we made the “arduous” 20- minute drive the next morning. Sometimes you’re just in the right place! We joined a very large and impressive crowd searching along the resaca including the likes of Kenn Kaufmann. The kingfisher was finally spotted, and we all got great looks. This was the most important lifer of the trip!"

The resaca where the Amazon Kingfisher was seen.  We had great scope views of the bird but were unable to photograph it.

A photographer we talked to had gotten great photos of the Amazon Kingfisher in this corner of the rescaca not long before we arrived.

Our group R to L: Bob and Pat, Ron, Marion and Sparkle.
The spectacle of birders clambering for a chance to see the Amazon Kingfisher.  Police cars were there to warn oncoming traffic of distracted birders.  We were there in the company Ken Kaufmann who was leading a tour from the birding festival nearby.

SABAL PALM AUDUBON SANCTUARY

Sabal Palm Sanctuary
Border fences and border guards were a fact of life in the Rio Grande Valley.  Sabal Palm had only recently been reopened as the improvement in border protection had come.

Green Kingfisher: an attempt at digi-scoping with cell phone

Our first look at the Rio Grande at Sabal Palms.  It is not very impressive here.

Couch's Kingbird: The song gives it away.  It is so similar in appearance to Western Kingbird.

Green Jay:  It is hard to believe that these gorgeous birds are so common there.

OLIVEIRA PARK

"An evening visit to Oliviera City Park in Brownsville gave us Red-crowned Parrots and Green Parakeets. What a wonderful racket!"

Red-crowned Parrots entertained us as night came to Brownsville, Texas.  There were SO many.  An estimated 285 parrots came in waves and covered the trees where they would roost for the night.
